The Solid Phase Extraction System Has Been A Delight In Science

By Christine Evans

As the world is getting crowded, the number of diseases has increased due to the rise of newly discovered viruses. The crowdedness of the world has forced manufacturers to use artificial materials and or chemicals to speed up production of goods. With the chemicals being carelessly disposed after usage, combined with the existing natural viruses, diseases have become resilient to science. However, scientists have made advancement in their methods, too, through the invention of a solid phase extraction system or SPE system device.

The job of pharmacological scientists is to sort out contaminated liquid materials in the hopes of countering production and reproduction of contagions. This system has allowed these scientists to isolate each element depending on its chemical and physical properties. Eventually, it will lead to sample extraction, preservation and storage, site sampling, and indicating of unique biometrics.

This delight has been convenient for pharmacological scientists because it is capable of portability. A sample can easily be susceptible to degeneration during transportation from the area it is collected from. The scientists have been given the peace of mind that during the transport, the samples collected are being kept safe, and its integrity uncompromised. The delight has been a great help for doctors assigned in areas where medical research facilities are evasive.

SPE devices have multiple types. A scientist can determine the proper device for the desired application would depend on the volume of the sample, degree of contamination, complexity of sample matrix, quantity of compounds of interest, and type and solvent strength of sample matrix. However, there are three ways that a scientist can separate compounds of interest from impurities using a certain SPE device. Each method depends on the scheme one needs that is appropriate for the sample gathering. Below are those three processes.

The selective extraction method. Using an SPE sorbent that would bind the selected compounds of the sample, the compounds are retained when it passes through the tube. One can either choose to collect the adsorbed compounds or discard the tube containing extracted impurities.

The selective washing method. When the sample passes through, the compound of interests and impurities are retained on the SPE packing. The impurities are then rinsed with wash solutions that are capable or removing them, and will leave the compound behind.

The selective elution method. Using another sorbent, the adsorbed compound is being eluted. This will leave the strongly retained impurities behind.

This system is also advantageous to the police. This device is capable of the extraction of DNA from evidence that will later on indict the criminal. Each person has a unique biological footprint that the police can easily compare among the suspected criminals.

The increase of human population resulted to the production of new diseases that are formed using artificial ingredients, and restoring and strengthening of diseases that were formed in nature. This has resulted to the desire of doctors to find new ways in countering them. Scientists are not the only ones who can help in the movement. Individuals can start boycotting merchandise from manufacturing companies that use hazardous ingredients during the making of such products.
